Diwali - First meeting

The first meeting with everyone involved in the Diwali celebrations was at the Town Hall. This gave us a chance to get a feel for the event and speak to all those involved. Coming away from this first meeting the clear focus was to have visuals projected onto the exterior of the Town Hall. This is way beyond the capabilities of my own projector but Ipswich council had agreed to lend their own which was primarily used in the Regent for performances. We would need to test this before the event to know if this was going to be effective. It was agreed that the best place to project from was Debenhams opposite and that this would be arranged by the council. Testing the projector was a priority as it was an unknown factor, and there was the possibility it would not cope at the distance needed.

The meeting also gave us the chance to get a 'feel' for the festival, seeing traditional indian dancing and promotional material helped generate a visual language or starting point from which to work. Talking to the organisers we also developed a greater understanding of what the diwali festival means to the different communities who celebrate it.

Following the link on the right hand menu bar to my Pinterest account there can be found a board of diwali reference imagery. My experiments in Photoshop and Aftereffects were influenced by this initial research.
